GMF completes landmark C-130H modernisation strengthening Indonesia’s military MRO capabilities

PT Garuda Maintenance Facility Aero Asia Tbk (GMF), a member of the Garuda Indonesia Group, has completed the modernisation of the Indonesian Air Force’s C-130H Hercules aircraft, tail number A-1319, marking another milestone in the country’s efforts to build indigenous military aircraft maintenance capabilities.

The upgraded aircraft was officially handed over at GMF Hangar 4 by Andi Fahrurrozi, Chief Executive Officer of GMF, to Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence in a ceremony witnessed by Defence Minister General (Honorary, Retired) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

The delivery makes A-1319 the second C-130H Hercules to complete GMF’s comprehensive modernisation programme, following the successful completion of aircraft A-1315 in 2023.

Comprehensive life extension programme

The modernisation package included a Center Wing Box Replacement (CWBR), Avionic Upgrade Program (AUP), and Structural Integrity Program (SIP), a combination designed to extend the aircraft’s operational service life while enhancing avionics capabilities, structural performance, and overall mission reliability.

The work enables the Indonesian Air Force to maintain the operational readiness of its ageing Hercules fleet while incorporating modern systems that improve aircraft performance and long-term sustainability.

First prototype

One of the programme’s most significant achievements is that A-1319 became the first prototype C-130H aircraft to undergo these modifications outside Lockheed Martin‘s own facilities.

The accomplishment demonstrates GMF’s ability to execute highly complex military aircraft modernisation programmes and represents an important validation of its technical capabilities in heavy military MRO and structural modification.

Indonesia’s Defence MRO ecosystem

The project forms part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to strengthen self-reliance in maintaining critical defence assets while reducing dependence on overseas maintenance providers.

For GMF, the successful completion of successive Hercules modernisation programmes supports its long-term ambition of developing into a dedicated Hercules Service Center, further expanding its role within Indonesia’s defence and aerospace ecosystem.

As regional demand for military fleet sustainment continues to grow, GMF’s expanding expertise in complex structural modifications, avionics upgrades, and life-extension programmes positions the company as an increasingly capable defence MRO player in Southeast Asia.
