GCAP Engine consortium advances next-gen combat engine demonstrator

The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) engine consortium, comprising Avio Aero (Italy), IHI Corporation (Japan) and Rolls-Royce (UK), has reached another major milestone in the development of its next-generation combat aircraft engine, moving closer to ground-testing the engine demonstrator following a series of successful consortium design reviews.

The three companies are jointly developing the advanced power and propulsion system that will power the future GCAP combat aircraft, with the programme focused on delivering greater performance, higher electrical power generation and advanced thermal management for next-generation military missions.

To strengthen international collaboration, the consortium recently established a dedicated Collaboration Hub in Reading, United Kingdom. The facility enables engineers from all three partners to work alongside the GCAP Agency and Edgewing, accelerating technology development and programme execution.

The consortium has also made significant progress in the engine demonstrator programme. More than 100 sub-scale component tests have been completed, while manufacturing of key engine components continues. The programme is now moving towards final approval of the centreline engine demonstrator, which will soon undergo ground testing.

The engine demonstrator will play a critical role in validating new propulsion technologies, integrated engine architecture and advanced development processes before the full-scale engine enters production. The testing programme is expected to reduce technical risks while shortening the overall development cycle for the future combat aircraft.

Edoardo Curti, General Manager of the Defence Business Unit at Avio Aero, said the progress achieved by the three companies marks an important milestone in delivering next-generation propulsion technology and reflects the strength of the long-term partnership under GCAP.

Noriyuki Nakamura, Senior Technical Advisor for Aero Engine, Space & Defence Business Area at IHI Corporation, said the programme combines Japan’s advanced engine technologies with the expertise of Avio Aero and Rolls-Royce to develop the propulsion system that will become the “heart” of future combat aircraft while strengthening international industrial collaboration.

Phil Townley, Director of Future Programmes, Defence at Rolls-Royce, highlighted that the new engine is being designed to function as a “flying power station,” capable of managing the significantly higher electrical and thermal demands of future sensors, mission systems and advanced weapon technologies. He added that the trilateral partnership is enabling faster development by combining expertise across national and industrial boundaries.
