Boeing 737 MAX deliveries, lie-flat Business Class upgrades and larger overhead bins form part of airline’s next phase of fleet and product development
flydubai is set to take its fleet beyond the 100-aircraft mark in 2026, while simultaneously investing in the upgrade of its existing Boeing 737 MAX fleet as the Dubai-based carrier enters its next phase of growth.
The airline will take delivery of 11 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft during 2026, comprising seven 737-9 MAX and four 737-8 MAX aircraft. The deliveries will expand the carrier’s fleet while supporting network growth, additional capacity on high-demand routes and the replacement of older aircraft.
Alongside the fleet expansion, flydubai is launching a new cabin retrofit programme, reinforcing its focus on extending and enhancing the capabilities of aircraft already in service.
Over the next 12 months, 21 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft currently equipped with recliner Business Class seats will be retrofitted with flydubai’s signature lie-flat Business Class seats. The programme is scheduled to begin in September.
Retrofit programme targets 21 aircraft
The retrofit initiative is designed to bring greater consistency to flydubai’s onboard product as the airline expands its fleet. The programme will replace existing Business Class recliner seats with lie-flat seats, giving passengers an enhanced premium experience while allowing the airline to upgrade aircraft already operating within its network.
The aircraft will also receive Boeing Space Bins, replacing existing overhead storage units. The larger bins can accommodate up to six standard-sized cabin bags, compared with four in a standard overhead bin.
Beyond improving storage capacity, the upgrade is expected to support a smoother boarding experience by providing passengers with greater overhead space.
More premium capacity across the MAX fleet
flydubai’s expanding Boeing 737 MAX fleet is also bringing additional premium capacity to the airline. The carrier’s Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft are configured with 16 Business Class and 156 Economy Class seats, while some Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft feature 10 Business Class seats.
The additional premium capacity gives flydubai greater flexibility to respond to Business Class demand across international routes, while allowing it to optimise capacity across existing frequencies.
Fleet expansion supports network growth
The 11 aircraft scheduled for delivery this year form part of flydubai’s longer-term fleet modernisation strategy. The introduction of additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is intended to provide capacity for network expansion while supporting the airline’s objective of maintaining a younger and more fuel-efficient fleet.
The new-generation aircraft will also provide greater flexibility as flydubai continues to develop its international network from Dubai.
“Growing our fleet beyond 100 aircraft is a significant milestone for flydubai and shows how far we have come,” said Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer, flydubai. He added that the deliveries would provide the capacity and flexibility needed to support the airline’s growing operations, while the retrofit programme demonstrates that flydubai’s investment extends beyond new aircraft.
Building on earlier cabin investment
The latest retrofit programme follows a previous multimillion-dollar investment that saw flydubai refresh the cabins of its Next-Generation Boeing 737-800 fleet. That earlier programme included the introduction of lie-flat Business Class seats, new Economy Class seats and inflight entertainment.
The latest upgrades build on that investment, with the airline seeking greater product consistency as newer aircraft join the fleet and existing aircraft undergo cabin enhancements.
MRO and engineering capability part of wider growth strategy
For flydubai, fleet growth and cabin upgrades are forming part of a broader investment programme extending beyond aircraft and passenger products. The airline is also investing in technology, training and engineering infrastructure as it prepares for its next phase of expansion.
The combination of new aircraft deliveries and retrofit activity gives flydubai two complementary paths to fleet development: introducing new-generation capacity while upgrading aircraft already in operation. As the carrier moves beyond the 100-aircraft threshold, this approach will become increasingly important in maintaining product consistency across a growing fleet while supporting network expansion.
Airline of the Month
flydubai’s 100-aircraft milestone represents more than fleet growth. Its strategy demonstrates how a rapidly expanding airline can combine new-generation aircraft acquisition with targeted retrofit programmes, extending the value of its existing fleet while improving passenger-facing capabilities.
With 11 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft scheduled for delivery and 21 existing MAX aircraft undergoing cabin upgrades over the next 12 months, flydubai is simultaneously investing in fleet renewal, cabin modification and engineering capability, key pillars of its next stage of operational growth.
