Ethiopian Airlines to build a Mega Airport with 110 million passengers capacity annually
Located at a lower elevation than Addis Ababa, the new airport will address operational challenges associated with high-altitude airports.

The Mega Airport City will boast a 1.1 million square meter terminal, extensive airline support facilities, and significant cargo infrastructure.

Ethiopian Airlines, the flag carrier of Ethiopia, and Dar Al-Handasah, an international consulting firm, signed an agreement for the design and supervision of a new mega airport to be built at Abusera in Bishoftu city, with the capacity to serve 110 million passengers each year, which is four times the current capacity of Bole International Airport.

Mr. Mesfin Tasew, CEO, Ethiopian Airlines’ Group, said, “The project will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth and prioritize environmentally responsible practices in our country and beyond, reflecting the airline’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport promises to elevate African aviation and strengthen partnerships, marking a significant advancement for the region’s air travel infrastructure”.

This ambitious development, situated just 40 kilometers from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, promises to transform air travel in Ethiopia. The new airport is expected to accommodate up to four times more passengers than the current capacity of Bole International Airport.

Dar’s Director of Operations in Ethiopia Tariq Al-Qanni, stated, “We are privileged to be collaborating with Ethiopian Airlines on this visionary new airport, which will provide vital global air connectivity, accelerate economic growth in Ethiopia, and elevate Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s most strategic and most competitive aviation group.”

The first phase of the project, slated for completion in 2029, will establish Ethiopia as a pivotal global gateway to Africa with an initial capacity of 60 million passengers, nearly tripling the passenger volume of Africa’s busiest airport in 2022.

The Mega Airport City will include a 1.1 million square meter terminal with passenger facilities, 126,190 square meters of airline support infrastructure, and more than 100,000 square meters dedicated to cargo and airport services. Additionally, it will feature an airfield and other crucial airport infrastructure.
