Embraer forms joint venture with Nidec to produce advanced Electric Propulsion System.
The joint venture will be owned 51% by Nidec and 49% by Embraer.

Nidec Aerospace will specialize in developing and manufacturing Electric Propulsion Systems for eVTOL vehicles, with future plans to extend their offerings to non-eVTOL aircraft.

Embraer of Brazil and Nidec Corporation of Japan have announced a groundbreaking joint venture called Nidec Aerospace LLC. The collaboration aims to develop Electric Propulsion Systems for the aerospace sector, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of air mobility. The joint venture will be officially unveiled at the 54th biennial Paris Air Show and will initially focus on supporting the growth of the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) industry.

Nidec, a global leader in motor manufacturing, will combine forces with Embraer, drawing on the latter’s more than 50 years of aerospace expertise, to design, certify, produce, and commercialize next-generation electric propulsion systems. These systems will incorporate proven technologies that enable the operation of more efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft models.

“Technological innovation will be a key contributor to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. The JV is a natural extension of both companies’ respective and continual investments in green technologies across multiple industries to accelerate global carbon neutrality,” said Michael Briggs, Senior Vice President and President of the Motion & Energy Business Unit, Nidec. “We are proud to be partnered with Embraer and are confident that Nidec Aerospace will spearhead the electrification of aircraft with our shared drive, complementary expertise, and wide breadth of technical and manufacturing capabilities,” he further added.

Nidec Aerospace will specialize in developing and manufacturing Electric Propulsion Systems for electric Vertical Take-Off Landing (eVTOL) vehicles, with future plans to extend their offerings to non-eVTOL aircraft. The joint venture will be owned 51% by Nidec and 49% by Embraer. The headquarters will be located at Nidec Motor Corporation (NMC) in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, and will be supported by the companies’ existing industrial footprint in Brazil and Mexico.

“Innovation is our future growth driver and a key pillar of our strategic plan. That’s why I’m extremely excited about this strategic partnership with Nidec to develop agnostics solutions for aerospace sector,” said Francisco Gomes Neto, President and CEO, Embraer. “Demand for electric propulsion systems is growing exponentially in the aerospace sector, and we are confident that Nidec and Embraer together can accelerate the development of advanced products to enable the future of sustainable aviation,” he further added.

The launch-customer for the Electric Propulsion System developed by the joint venture will be Eve Air Mobility, an independent eVTOL manufacturer. Eve Air Mobility is well-positioned to become a global leader in the UAM segment, offering effective and sustainable urban transportation solutions. The establishment of the joint venture is subject to various regulatory approvals, including antitrust and customary closing conditions. The companies anticipate the transaction to be completed in the second half of 2023.
