Duncan Aviation Installs Garmin Avionics Upgrade on Citation CJ2
The installation features GWX 8000 StormOptix radar for automated weather updates and PlaneSync for automatic avionics updates and remote monitoring via the Garmin Pilot app.

Advanced GFC 600 autopilot system supports coupled VNAV descents and go-arounds, with Garmin’s ESP providing independent flight stability and protection.

Duncan Aviation has completed the installation of a comprehensive Garmin avionics upgrade on a Citation CJ2 aircraft at its Satellite facility in Denver, Colorado. The upgrade utilizes the Garmin STC, incorporating dual 10.6-inch G600 TXi displays, dual GTN 750Xi navigators, a 7-inch portrait TXi EIS display, the GFC 600 autopilot system, a GMA 350 Audio Panel, and GI 275 Standby instruments.

A key benefit of this installation is the integration of the GFC 600 autopilot system. This advanced autopilot supports coupled VNAV descents and fully coupled go-arounds and includes Garmin’s Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP), which functions independently of the autopilot. ESP assists the pilot by subtly adjusting the aircraft to maintain an appropriate flight attitude during manual operation.

The GFC 600 can manage a broad spectrum of precision, non-precision, and GPS-guided approaches, and can even create custom holds if needed. Additionally, it features Emergency Descent Mode (EDM), which automatically guides the aircraft to a preset altitude in the event of cabin depressurization, minimizing the risk of hypoxia.

Edduyn Pita, Duncan Aviation’s Denver Satellite Manager, said, “The installation went well and it is the first of three CJ2s that will receive the upgrade in close succession, We performed a similar installation earlier this year when we installed the G600 TXi in our company-owned PC-12, so we are developing installation efficiencies. That aircraft, in addition to receiving cutting-edge technology in the flight deck also saw significant weight savings of over 160 pounds.”

A major benefit of this installation is the GFC 600 autopilot system. It supports coupled VNAV descents and fully coupled go-arounds and features Garmin’s Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP), which operates independently of the autopilot to assist the pilot in maintaining the correct flight attitude during manual control. The system is capable of managing various precision, non-precision, and GPS-guided approaches, including custom holds if needed. Additionally, it includes Emergency Descent Mode (EDM), which automatically descends the aircraft to a preset altitude in the event of cabin depressurization, helping to prevent hypoxic conditions.

Jim Alpiser, Director of Aviation Aftermarket Sales for Garmin said, “We are thrilled to have the Duncan Aviation team committed to installation excellence of this comprehensive Garmin avionics upgrade for the CJ2, PC-12 and many other airframes, Aircraft owners will be pleased with the incredible capabilities and value these avionics upgrades add to the airframe.”

The installation features the GWX 8000 StormOptix weather radar, which automates adjustments to provide a clear and simplified weather view. Its advanced ground clutter suppression technology ensures accurate weather depiction at all altitudes and ranges. The upgrade also includes the option to integrate the PlaneSync connected aircraft management system, which automatically updates avionics databases, logs flight and engine data, and enables remote monitoring of fuel and system status via the Garmin Pilot app, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Nate Klenke, Duncan Aviation’s Completions/Modifications Sales Manager, said, “Duncan Aviation has an excellent relationship with Garmin, deep expertise in Garmin systems, and can rely on the engineering support and expertise available at our full-service MRO facilities as we complete these upgrades within our Satellite network,”

With the first CJ2 installation now complete, Duncan Aviation expects future G600 TXi upgrades to be finished within eight weeks. To optimize aircraft downtime, the Denver Satellite collaborated with Straight Flight, an FFA Part 145 Repair Station at Centennial Airport, to conduct necessary airframe inspections and maintenance during the flight deck upgrade.
