Chinese Airlines place orders for 95 Airbus aircraft to accelerate fleet modernisation

Chinese carriers are strengthening their long-term fleet expansion plans with orders for 95 Airbus aircraft, underscoring continued investment in fuel-efficient fleets and future network growth.

Air China and its subsidiary Shenzhen Airlines have signed agreements with Airbus for a combined 55 aircraft. The order includes 15 Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft for Air China and 40 Airbus A320neo family aircraft for Shenzhen Airlines, with a combined catalogue value of approximately US$12.44 billion.

Air China’s A350-900 aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2030 and 2032, while Shenzhen Airlines will receive its A320neo family aircraft from 2029 through 2032. The airlines noted that the final purchase price will be lower than the published catalogue value following commercial negotiations with Airbus.

According to the Air China Group, the acquisition will support its long-term fleet renewal strategy, expand network capacity, improve fuel efficiency and reduce operating costs. Based on the group’s 2025 fleet, the A350 order is expected to increase overall capacity by approximately 7.1%, while the Shenzhen Airlines order will add around 4.3% capacity, with a portion of the aircraft replacing older fleet types. The transaction remains subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.

In a separate agreement, Hainan Airlines has committed to purchasing 40 Airbus A320neo family aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme.

The order carries a catalogue value of up to US$5.36 billion, although Hainan Airlines confirmed the final purchase price will be below the published list price after negotiated discounts. Deliveries are planned between 2028 and 2032.

The airline said the acquisition will optimise its fleet structure, increase operational capacity and strengthen its long-term competitiveness while supporting future route expansion. The purchase will be financed through a mix of internal funds, bank financing, finance leases and other financing arrangements, and remains subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.

With a combined commitment for 95 Airbus aircraft, the latest orders highlight Chinese airlines’ continued focus on fleet renewal, operational efficiency and sustained growth in domestic and international markets.
