China Eastern Commissions Asia’s largest widebody MRO hangar

China Eastern Airlines’ newly restructured MRO division, China Eastern Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Shanghai), has commissioned what it describes as Asia’s largest widebody aircraft maintenance hangar, expanding its capabilities as demand for aircraft aftermarket services grows across the region.

Located in the Lingang New Area Industrial Park, the facility covers 46,000 square metres (500,000 square feet) and measures approximately 313 metres wide and 146 metres deep. The hangar can accommodate up to nine widebody and two narrowbody aircraft simultaneously.

The facility is directly connected to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and is positioned within a growing aerospace industry cluster that includes COMAC’s aircraft final assembly operations.

China Eastern Aircraft Maintenance Engineering currently provides heavy maintenance services for Boeing, Airbus and COMAC aircraft. Its capabilities also include Airbus A330 passenger-to-freighter conversions and lease-return inspections.

The company plans to further expand the hangar’s capabilities, with a target of supporting 10 widebody maintenance lines, two narrowbody lines and a dedicated aircraft painting line.

Over the next five years, China Eastern Aircraft Maintenance Engineering aims to increase annual productivity at the facility to 2 million work hours.

The new hangar will provide China Eastern with additional capacity to support its expanding fleet while creating a stronger platform to pursue third-party MRO business in China and across the wider Asia-Pacific market.
