Textron Aviation has achieved a significant milestone in the development of its next-generation light jet portfolio after the Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 prototype completed its maiden flight, moving the aircraft a step closer to FAA certification and entry into service.
The first flight marks the third aircraft in Textron Aviation’s Citation Gen3 family to enter flight testing, joining the Citation CJ4 Gen3 and Citation M2 Gen3 programmes.
The nearly two-hour flight departed from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, where test pilots Steve Helmer and Dave Welbrock evaluated cockpit software functionality and aircraft systems. During the flight, the CJ3 Gen3 reached an altitude of 41,000 feet and a maximum indicated airspeed of 278 knots.
“This achievement continues the forward momentum of the CJ3 Gen3 programme and reflects the discipline, innovation and commitment of this team,” said Chris Hearne, Senior Vice President, Engineering & Programs, Textron Aviation. “Comprehensive flight testing will now begin for this aircraft with rigorous validation of its performance as we continue to work toward FAA certification and entry into service.”

According to Textron Aviation, the Citation CJ3 Gen3 incorporates Garmin Emergency Autoland into the Garmin G3000 avionics suite, enhancing operational safety while retaining the performance, payload capability and operating efficiency that have made the Citation family a popular choice in the light business jet segment.
“From take-off to landing, the aircraft demonstrated the handling qualities and system performance we expected,” said Steve Helmer, Flight Test Pilot, Textron Aviation. “This first flight validated months of preparation and provided a strong foundation as we expand testing and continue the certification programme.”
The Citation CJ3 Gen3 offers a maximum range of 2,040 nautical miles, a payload capacity of 2,135 pounds, seating for up to 10 occupants and a baggage capacity of 1,000 pounds. Textron Aviation expects the aircraft to further strengthen its next-generation Citation portfolio as it progresses through certification.
