Boom Supersonic, the pioneering company behind the Overture, the world’s fastest airliner, has announced the appointment of Scott Powell as Senior Vice President of Symphony, the innovative propulsion system designed for the Overture. With an illustrious career spanning almost four decades in aerospace programs, Powell will spearhead the development, certification, integration, and industrialization of Symphony.

Boom Supersonic unveiled its Symphony propulsion system in December 2022, tailored specifically for the Overture supersonic airliner. Engineered to offer airlines a remarkable 25% increase in time on wing and a 10% reduction in operating costs, Symphony is a bespoke engine developed in collaboration with industry leaders including Florida Turbine Technologies (FTT), GE Additive, and StandardAero.

Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO, Boom said, “We’ve made significant design progress on Symphony. Adding Scott’s leadership and experience overseeing certifications for a wide range of civil and military propulsion systems only further strengthens our path forward with Symphony. We’re thrilled to have him onboard.”

Prior to joining Boom, Powell amassed 38 years of invaluable experience at Boeing, where he led the Engineering Propulsion division for the Boeing Dreamliner project. He played a pivotal role in the propulsion system’s design, development, testing, build, and business management, particularly for the 787-8/-9 models. His illustrious career also included managing the complete propulsion integrated product teams for iconic aircraft such as the KC-46 Tanker and the Joint Strike Fighter. Powell’s recent accomplishments encompassed his role as the Propulsion Integrated Product Team (IPT) Leader for the B-52J Commercial Engine Replacement Program.

Scott Powell, Senior Vice President, Boom said, “Boom understands the significant upside that can be achieved through an engine specifically customized for Overture. I’m inspired by the considerable progress already achieved with Symphony, and I look forward to working with the team on the propulsion system that will power the future of sustainable supersonic travel.”

In June 2023, at the Paris Air Show, Boom unveiled pivotal milestones in the Symphony program, revealing engine architecture and essential specifications for the revolutionary propulsion system. The event also marked the introduction of a 3D-printed ⅓ scale design model for Symphony, showcasing the remarkable advancements made in its development. The collaboration with Florida Turbine Technologies (FTT) was expanded, with FTT taking on the assembly of initial production units for ground and flight tests, as well as certification, at its facility in Jupiter, Florida.
