Vietnam Airlines’ choice of the 737 MAX family is strategically aligned with the airline’s vision for its fleet, covering the period from 2025 to 2030 and beyond to 2035.
Boeing and Vietnam Airlines have joined forces in a significant commitment to enhance the Vietnamese carrier’s fleet. Vietnam Airlines has pledged to order 50 Boeing 737-8 airplanes, a move that promises to fortify economic ties between the United States and Vietnam, as well as generate jobs in both countries. The announcement was made during a ceremony attended by President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, White House officials, and Vietnamese government leaders on September 11, 2023.

The investment in new narrow-body aircraft underscores the airline’s commitment to recovery and its mission to provide top-notch service on domestic and Asian routes while modernizing its fleet for enhanced fuel efficiency.
Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines said, “In line with Vietnam Airlines’ 2025-2030 fleet strategy and a vision to 2035, aircraft investment is a crucial project that underpins positive recovery momentum and prosperous outlook for the airline. The new narrow-body fleet will allow us to foster our overall development and extend our high-quality service on Vietnam Airlines’ domestic and Asian routes, as well as modernize our fuel-efficient fleet.”
Southeast Asia, one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, is an ideal fit for the Boeing 737 MAX. This aircraft family will enable Vietnam Airlines to efficiently meet the escalating demand for air travel in the region. This commitment represents a significant milestone in Vietnam’s aviation industry, strengthening ties between nations and positioning Vietnam Airlines for a prosperous future.
The Boeing 737 MAX boasts numerous advantages, including enhanced fuel efficiency, reduced carbon emissions by 20%, and a smaller noise footprint compared to older aircraft models. Passengers will also enjoy increased comfort with features like modern sculpted sidewalls, LED lighting that creates a spacious ambiance, and larger pivoting overhead storage bins.

We value our historic partnership with Vietnam Airlines, dating back to 1995 when the airline first leased 767s.”
Vietnam Airlines’ new 737 MAX fleet will have the capability to cover distances of up to 3,500 nautical miles (approximately 6,480 kilometers). This range makes it ideal for servicing popular international and regional routes, further solidifying Vietnam’s position as an emerging aviation hub. Currently, the airline operates 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets and serves over 50 destinations across 17 countries. Being a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Vietnam Airlines offers passengers access to a network of 1,000 destinations worldwide through its 18 partner airlines.
