Boeing has secured a $2.38 billion US Air Force contract for 22 additional F-15EX fighters, expanding the fleet under contract to 120 aircraft and increasing the future requirement for maintenance and sustainment support.
The latest award covers additional F-15EX aircraft under the US Air Force’s full-rate production programme. Boeing is now under contract for Lots 1 through 7, bringing the total number of F-15EX fighters contracted by the service to 120.
For the defence MRO sector, the expanding fleet represents a growing long-term requirement for aircraft maintenance, component support, technical services, inspection and sustainment activities as more F-15EX aircraft enter operational service.
Growing fleet creates larger sustainment base
The F-15EX is the latest variant of the F-15 family and incorporates an all-glass cockpit, advanced mission systems and updated aircraft systems. These technologies will require specialised technical expertise and support infrastructure as the fleet expands.
The commonality of the F-15EX with the wider F-15 family can provide a foundation for leveraging existing maintenance knowledge, facilities and support infrastructure while introducing new systems specific to the latest variant.
Boeing recently delivered F-15EX-22, the first aircraft associated with the Lot 3 contract. Continued production will progressively increase the number of aircraft requiring scheduled maintenance and operational support.
The F-15EX combines a modernised cockpit with advanced mission systems, increasing the importance of avionics, electrical and mission-system support alongside conventional airframe and propulsion maintenance.
For MRO organisations, supporting the aircraft will therefore extend beyond traditional fighter airframe maintenance to include diagnostics, avionics support, software-enabled systems and specialised component maintenance.
Production expansion strengthens lifecycle support requirements
The growing fleet also provides a larger installed base for suppliers supporting aircraft components, systems and maintenance equipment throughout the F-15EX lifecycle.
“Boeing is committed to delivering this critically important aircraft to the US Air Force, which will strengthen the nation’s ability to project power and stay ahead of emerging threats around the world,” said Christina Upah, Vice President of F-15 Programs, Boeing.
With 120 aircraft now under contract, the F-15EX programme is progressing through multiple production lots while the US Air Force builds its expanded F-15 fleet.

As additional aircraft enter service, sustainment requirements will increasingly encompass fleet-level maintenance planning, spare parts availability, technical data, component repair and workforce training.
The latest production award therefore extends beyond the delivery of 22 aircraft, establishing a larger installed fleet that will require long-term MRO and lifecycle support throughout its operational service.
