Boeing, Bahir Dar University partner to advance workforce development in Ethiopia

Boeing has signed a long-term partnership with Bahir Dar University (BDU) to strengthen aerospace engineering education, foster aviation innovation and develop a highly skilled workforce to support the rapid growth of Ethiopia’s aviation sector and the wider African aerospace industry.

The collaboration will see the establishment of an Aviation Innovation Center at the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, creating a dedicated platform for experiential learning, applied research, technology development and early-stage aerospace innovation. The initiative is expected to play a key role in preparing engineers and aviation professionals capable of supporting the continent’s expanding commercial aviation, airport infrastructure and aerospace manufacturing sectors.

The agreement comes at a time when Africa’s aviation industry is entering a period of sustained growth, driving demand not only for new aircraft but also for a highly trained technical workforce capable of supporting fleet expansion, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities, manufacturing and emerging aviation technologies.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Henok Teferra Shawl, Managing Director, Boeing Africa, highlighted the scale of the opportunity facing the continent over the next two decades. “Over the next two decades, African carriers will need more than 1,200 new airplanes and 74,000 new aviation professionals,” Shawl said. “Together with Bahir Dar University, we will help create clear career pathways for young talent, align education with industry requirements and support the ongoing expansion of Ethiopia’s airline operations, airport infrastructure and aerospace component industrial base.”

The partnership is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements by equipping students with practical engineering skills while creating stronger collaboration between universities and the aerospace sector.

At the heart of the collaboration is the proposed Aviation Innovation Center, which will serve as a multidisciplinary hub for aerospace research, product development and technology incubation. During its first phase in 2026, Boeing and Bahir Dar University will focus on developing the centre’s infrastructure, establishing laboratories and deploying dedicated technical personnel.

Students will gain access to advanced engineering tools and equipment, including 3D printers, flight simulators, aerospace design software, drone assembly kits and avionics test benches, enabling them to design, prototype and test next-generation aerospace technologies.

The facility will support research in several emerging areas, including:

  • Sustainable aviation technologies
  • Digital engineering solutions
  • Aerospace-grade materials
  • Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
  • Aircraft systems innovation

Beyond serving Bahir Dar University students, the centre will also be accessible to other universities, high schools and aerospace start-ups across Ethiopia, creating a broader innovation ecosystem for the country’s growing aviation industry.

The partnership also aims to enhance students’ learning experience through innovation competitions, technical workshops, mentoring programmes and direct engagement with Boeing professionals.

According to Dr. Mengesha Ayene Ejigu, President of Bahir Dar University, the initiative represents a transformational opportunity for aerospace education in Ethiopia. “This partnership with Boeing represents a significant milestone for Bahir Dar University. Together, we are establishing a world-class platform for aerospace education, research, innovation and technology transfer that will prepare future aviation professionals and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.”

He added that the Aviation Innovation Center would build on the engineering strengths of the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology and serve as a catalyst for workforce development, technology commercialisation and aerospace innovation.

“Through this initiative, we are committed to supporting Ethiopia’s growing aerospace ecosystem while contributing to national and regional industrial transformation,” Ejigu said.

According to Boeing’s latest Commercial Market Outlook, African airlines are projected to require more than 1,200 new commercial aircraft over the next 20 years, creating demand for approximately 74,000 new aviation professionals across engineering, maintenance, flight operations and other technical disciplines.

For the MRO sector, this growing fleet will require substantial investments in skilled manpower, maintenance infrastructure and digital engineering capabilities to support long-term fleet availability and operational efficiency.

The collaboration further expands Boeing’s long-standing STEM education and workforce development initiatives in Ethiopia. Over the past five years, Boeing’s educational programmes in the country have reached more than 14,700 young people, encouraging careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Across Africa, the aerospace manufacturer has invested approximately US$14.5 million in youth development programmes over the past decade, benefiting more than 58,500 students and young professionals.

As African aviation continues to grow, partnerships between industry and academia are expected to become increasingly important in addressing one of the sector’s biggest challenges, the availability of skilled technical talent.

The Boeing–Bahir Dar University collaboration demonstrates how OEMs are moving beyond aircraft manufacturing to actively support workforce development, research and innovation. By combining academic expertise with industry experience, such initiatives can help build a sustainable pipeline of aerospace engineers, technicians and researchers capable of supporting the continent’s expanding airline, MRO and aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.

For Ethiopia, already home to one of Africa’s largest aviation hubs, the partnership represents another strategic step towards strengthening its position as a regional centre for aviation excellence, engineering innovation and aerospace capability development.
