BINANI AIR awards contract for new MRO hangar at Abuja Airport

Nigeria-based airline targets reduced reliance on overseas maintenance facilities with planned state-of-the-art facility

BINANI AIR has awarded a multi-million-dollar contract for the construction of a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hangar at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Nigeria.

The planned facility is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s aircraft maintenance capabilities and support the development of the country’s aviation sector by providing greater access to heavy maintenance services locally.

At present, Nigerian domestic airlines outsource a significant portion of their heavy maintenance requirements, including C-checks and D-checks, to MRO facilities in Europe, the Middle East and other African countries such as Egypt and Ethiopia.

According to BINANI AIR, the new MRO facility could help reduce this dependence on overseas providers while retaining and attracting around $218 million in annual foreign exchange within Nigeria.

Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, Chairperson of BINANI Group, said the project is expected to be completed within 12 months and could significantly transform aircraft maintenance in the country.

To develop the facility, BINANI AIR has signed a construction contract with a global firm for the delivery of the MRO hangar.

Senator Binani said the project would improve Nigeria’s domestic aircraft maintenance capacity and reduce the need for airlines to send aircraft abroad for major maintenance checks.

The investment represents a significant step towards expanding Nigeria’s aviation support infrastructure and developing a stronger domestic MRO ecosystem.
