BETA MV250 hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft unveiled at Farnborough Airshow

BETA Technologies unveils hybrid-electric MV250 military VTOL aircraft

BETA Technologies has unveiled the MV250, an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, at the Farnborough International Airshow. Designed for military logistics operations, the aircraft aims to provide greater range, higher speed, increased payload capacity and lower operating costs in contested environments.

The MV250 combines hybrid-electric propulsion with autonomous flight capability to support logistics missions on and off airports. The aircraft offers a reposition range of 1,300 nautical miles and can carry a payload of up to 2,000 pounds within a tactical range of 250 nautical miles, enabling the transport of equipment, munitions, medical supplies and other critical cargo.

According to BETA Technologies, the platform is based on its flight-proven ALIA VTOL aircraft architecture, leveraging existing propulsion, flight controls, software, battery systems and manufacturing processes to accelerate development while reducing costs. The company said the approach enables the aircraft to evolve as operational requirements change while maintaining a common technology foundation.

Kyle Clark, Founder and CEO of BETA Technologies, said the aircraft delivers significant operational advantages over conventional platforms.

“The basic physics of the MV250 enable significantly longer range, higher speed and a lower cost of operations when compared to tiltrotor and legacy platforms. I believe we should be offering our military the most robust and best equipment in the world to maintain superiority and thus deterrence,” Clark said.

He added that the aircraft combines BETA’s advanced airframe technology with products developed in collaboration with GE Aerospace and Sikorsky, creating a highly adaptable platform with lower procurement and lifecycle costs.

The hybrid-electric turbogenerator powering the MV250 has been developed jointly with GE Aerospace under a Joint Technology Development Agreement. Based on the CT7/T700 turbine, the system integrates mechatronic design and advanced power electronics to improve efficiency, durability and overall performance while extending flight range and providing ground-based auxiliary power.

Amy Gowder, CEO of Defense & Systems at GE Aerospace and a BETA board member, said the collaboration demonstrates the potential of hybrid propulsion for future military operations.

“We’re proud to be partnering with BETA to develop the mission-critical technologies that will deliver the operational advantage our military customers need. Together, we’re combining expertise in electrical power and advanced propulsion systems to build a turbogenerator that unlocks greater range and mission flexibility,” Gowder said.

The aircraft also incorporates an open-architecture flight control system capable of integrating multiple autonomous mission platforms, including Sikorsky’s MATRIX autonomy system and BETA’s internally developed autonomy technologies. The modular open systems approach (MOSA) is designed to support future mission upgrades and evolving defence requirements.

Rich Benton, Vice President and General Manager of Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, said the MV250 complements the company’s unmanned aircraft portfolio by expanding logistics capabilities for military operators.

The unveiling follows BETA’s growing engagement with military customers. Earlier this year, the company deployed its all-electric ALIA CTOL aircraft during NATO Exercise Aurora 26 in Sweden at the invitation of the U.S. Army, gaining operational experience that helped shape the development of the MV250.

BETA Technologies said the MV250 is manufactured using its existing production lines, common tooling and established manufacturing processes, providing faster production timelines and cost efficiencies. The company expects the aircraft to participate in upcoming large-scale military exercises as development progresses.
