BAE Systems hosts Defence Technology ‘Plugfest’ to advance open systems integration

BAE Systems recently hosted the Metro Detroit region’s first-ever defence technology ‘plugfest’ at its Virtual Proving Ground in Sterling Heights, Michigan, bringing together government representatives and defence industry partners to test the interoperability of military hardware and software.

The two-day event brought together seven companies from the United States and international defence industry, along with representatives from the U.S. government, to validate how different systems can work together using open systems architecture.

The plugfest provided participants with a live, virtual environment to test the compatibility of hardware and software, helping identify integration challenges early in the development process. The approach is designed to reduce technical risks, lower integration costs and accelerate the deployment of new defence technologies.

“Secure and reliable interoperability is one of the toughest challenges in defence systems development, and this event showed how we move from talking about open standards to proving they work,” said Dr. Adarsh Ayyar, Director of Technology for BAE Systems‘ Combat Mission Systems business.

He added that testing systems together allows industry and government to improve collaboration while helping deliver new capabilities to military forces more quickly and efficiently.

BAE Systems said the event demonstrated the importance of open systems architecture in enabling different technologies to operate seamlessly, regardless of the manufacturer. The company believes such collaborative testing will help speed up defence technology development while reducing programme costs and improving operational readiness for military customers.

The initiative also reflects the growing emphasis across the global defence sector on adopting open standards to simplify system integration, enhance lifecycle support and enable faster upgrades for future military platforms.
