American to provide Intelsat’s high-speed Wi-Fi on nearly 500 regional flights

With more than 900 mainline aircraft already offering high-speed connectivity, this initiative delivers a consistent and connected experience for passengers.

American Airlines will introduce Intelsat‘s high-speed Wi-Fi on its dual-class regional aircraft, with the installation of new Wi-Fi capability on nearly 500 regional aircraft starting in 2023.

American Airlines, a frontrunner in high-speed inflight connectivity among domestic airlines, is set to enhance its customers’ connected experience further. Over the next two years, the airline plans to introduce high-speed Wi-Fi on its dual-class regional aircraft, expanding its collaboration with Intelsat for the installation of new Wi-Fi capability on nearly 500 regional aircraft starting next year.

Currently providing high-speed Wi-Fi on over 900 mainline aircraft, American aims to surpass 1,400 satellite-connected aircraft, including its regional fleet, after the planned updates are implemented. The airline acknowledges the rapid evolution of inflight connectivity technology in the aviation industry and seeks to leverage Intelsat’s Electronically Steered Array (ESA) antennae.

Intelsat’s ESA technology is distinctive for its multi-orbit functionality, operating on both Intelsat’s geo-stationary satellites and a constellation of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. This approach ensures low-latency, high-speed internet connectivity for American’s customers. The upcoming technology adoption on regional aircraft will enable these planes to achieve Wi-Fi speeds comparable to those available on American’s mainline fleet.

With more than 900 mainline aircraft already offering high-speed connectivity, this initiative reaffirms American’s commitment to delivering a consistent and connected experience for passengers. The new technology aims to facilitate seamless streaming, browsing, email checking, and VPN access while inflight. The move aligns with the airline industry’s broader efforts to meet the increasing demand for reliable and high-speed connectivity during air travel.
