Alaska Airlines upgrades fleet with RECARO’s R2 and R5 seats, enhancing comfort and sustainability across 79 Aircraft.

RECARO Aircraft Seating has been chosen by Alaska Airlines, a long-term partner, to retrofit their Boeing 737-800 and MAX 8 aircraft. The retrofit will include the award-winning R2 economy class seat and the R5 business class seat. This upgrade will cover 79 aircraft in the Alaska fleet, accommodating a total of 12,719 passengers. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in Q4 2024.

As the launch customer for the R5 seat in 2017, Alaska Airlines will enhance passenger comfort with significant seat upgrades. The new seating will feature a six-way adjustable headrest and calf rest. Additionally, it will include a BYOD holder integrated into the seat back and USB-C connectivity. Furthermore, Alaska will upgrade one row of Economy Class to Premium Class. This transition will be supported by the RECARO Customer Service Team and the provided modification packages.

Dr. Mark Hiller, CEO of RECARO Aircraft Seating and RECARO Holding, said, “After 12 years of partnership, we are honored that Alaska Airlines has once again trusted RECARO Aircraft Seating in elevating the cabin experience with our premium seating solutions. Our R2 and R5 seats will also support the commitment of Alaska Airlines to a modern, efficient and eco-friendly fleet.”

The retrofitted cabins will also feature the R2 seat, a lighter, more modern version of the current seat. The R2 will include a comfort-plus cushion. Its lightweight design will enable a more efficient cabin layout without compromising passenger space. Additionally, this upgrade will contribute to reducing cabin weight and support the sustainability initiatives of both RECARO and Alaska Airlines.

Todd Traynor-Corey, MD Guest Products, said, “For years, RECARO seats have been synonymous with our industry leading First Class product. As we continue to grow our premium offerings to meet guest demand, we’re excited to bring on the R5 & R2 seats on our 737-800 and MAX8 aircraft. Packed with features like calf rests and footrests in First Class, to ergonomic device holders and USB-C power throughout the cabin, these new seats are a pillar in our ability to deliver a premium experience to our guests.”
