Alaska Airlines has confirmed plans to build a new $40m maintenance facility in Anchorage, located near its existing hangar. Local architect firm McCool Carlson Green and general contractor Kiewit will build the hangar, which is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2018.
Scheduled to open in Q2 of 2018, the new facility will be double the size of Alaska’s current hangar and will be able to accommodate two additional 737 MAX aircraft.
“Our existing facility has served us well for many years. As we grow and add larger planes to our fleet, it’s time we upgraded our northernmost maintenance facility,” said Kurt Kinder, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of maintenance and engineering.
The new Anchorage hangar is part of an overall $100m investment by the airline which also includes updating and upgrading airline-owned terminals throughout Alaska, while also adding three 737-700 freighter aircraft to its current fleet. This will thus improve the ability to serve cargo customers’ needs.
