Alaska Airlines today broke ground on a new $40 million aircraft maintenance and engineering facility located at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The design of the new 105,000-square-foot facility by Anchorage-based architect firm McCool Carlson Green was also unveiled.
“The design proudly displays our new brand while also providing a larger, more functional space for our 80 maintenance and engineering employees in Anchorage,” said Kurt Kinder, Alaska Airlines Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering. “This new hangar signifies our growing airline, as well as our continued commitment to the state of Alaska.”
The new facility will be more than double the size of the current hangar and holds two 737-Max 9 aircraft, which will be the largest and widest in the Alaska Airlines fleet. The current facility, located about a half mile from the new site, measures only 37,500 square feet and is unable to accommodate the newer, larger aircraft.
Construction will begin in the fall 2016 and is scheduled to be complete in the second quarter of 2018. Alaska Airlines has hired local general contractor and construction manager Kiewit Building Group to build the new hangar, and at peak construction, the project will employ 150 people.
Alaska Airlines is investing nearly $100 million over the next five years in the state of Alaska. In addition to the new hangar in Anchorage, the airline is updating, and in some cases, expanding the 11 airline-owned terminals across the state. Alaska Airlines is also adding three 737-700 freighter aircraft to its fleet, improving the ability to serve cargo customers’ needs with scheduled freighter service.
