Alaska Air Group enters activation phase of Alaska Accelerate with fleet expansion

Alaska Air Group has entered the next phase of its Alaska Accelerate strategy, moving from integration and foundation-building towards activating investments in fleet, international connectivity, cargo and premium capacity as it targets $1 billion in incremental profit by 2027.

Announced at the company’s 2026 Investor Day in Seattle, the strategy follows significant progress since Alaska Accelerate was launched in December 2024. Alaska Air Group said it has already captured approximately two-thirds of its $1 billion incremental profit target, which includes $500 million in merger synergies from the combination of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

The Group has also completed three of four major integration milestones: a single loyalty programme, a Single Operating Certificate and a single passenger service system. Joint collective bargaining with represented workgroups remains underway.

Fleet expansion drives future MRO requirements

A key element of the strategy is the expansion of Alaska Air Group’s fleet. The company has placed the largest fleet order in its history, with its fleet expected to grow from more than 400 aircraft today to approximately 550 aircraft by 2035.

The larger fleet will create additional requirements across aircraft maintenance, engineering, components, technical services and other aftermarket activities as Alaska and Hawaiian continue integrating their operations and introducing new aircraft.

The Group said its fleet is the youngest and most fuel-efficient among major U.S. carriers, while its broader strategy is focused on increasing aircraft utilisation and building a network capable of supporting longer-haul international operations.

International growth reshapes network

Alaska is also expanding its international network from its Seattle hub, using its strong West Coast presence across the Pacific Northwest, California and Hawaiʻi as the foundation for further growth.

The airline currently serves seven intercontinental destinations and expects to increase that number to at least 15 by 2030. Long-haul flying is expected to increase from approximately 8% of capacity today to around 15% by 2030.

Alaska has already launched nonstop services from Seattle to London, Rome, Reykjavik, Tokyo and Seoul, with Paris and Athens scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

The expansion into long-haul operations will have implications for widebody maintenance, engine support, components, cabin systems and other technical services as the international fleet and utilisation profile develop.

Increasing Revenue Beyond the Main Cabin

Alaska Air Group is also targeting a greater contribution from revenue streams outside the main cabin. Revenue outside the main cabin has increased by five percentage points over the past two years, reaching 53%, with the company targeting approximately 60% over time through premium products, international flying, Atmos Rewards and cargo.

Premium revenue is expected to exceed 40% of total revenue by 2030, compared with 35% today.

The airline also plans to introduce international premium economy cabins on its widebody fleet and take delivery of a new premium-oriented Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody aircraft for transcontinental and other markets where demand supports the configuration.

Integration to activation

The next phase of Alaska Accelerate therefore moves beyond combining Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines towards using the enlarged platform to generate additional capacity, connectivity and revenue.

For the aviation aftermarket, the strategy points to a growing technical footprint as the Group expands its fleet, increases long-haul operations, introduces new cabin configurations and scales its cargo activities.

With approximately two-thirds of the incremental profit target already captured, Alaska Air Group is now focused on activating investments across fleet, international connectivity, premium capacity, loyalty and cargo as it works towards the full $1 billion target by 2027.
