Airbus expands Belfast wing facility for A220 growth

Airbus has begun construction of a 6,221-square-metre expansion at its Belfast wing manufacturing facility, strengthening production capacity for the A220 programme as the aircraft maker prepares to increase output to 13 aircraft per month by 2028.

Scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028, the extension forms part of a wider multi-million-pound investment programme aimed at expanding advanced composite manufacturing capabilities while modernising the Northern Ireland site’s infrastructure.

The new facility will house a third autoclave, specialised wing tooling and additional cranage to support higher production volumes of the A220’s composite wings. Alongside the manufacturing expansion, Airbus will introduce new high-voltage electrical substations, a new security entrance, an office block, upgraded IT systems and a 650-space car park.

Anthony Rouse, Head of Airbus Belfast Plant and Site, said the investment is designed to prepare the site for future demand while reinforcing its long-term role within the A220 programme.

“Enhancing our wing facilities is a direct investment in the future of A220 wing production here in Belfast, building the capacity required to meet the growing demand for this aircraft. This commitment is also reflected in our ongoing skills development, including bringing onboard 40 new apprentices who will start in September this year.”

Beyond boosting production, the expansion has broader implications for the aftermarket. As Airbus accelerates A220 deliveries, the global support ecosystem including component repairs, composite maintenance expertise, tooling requirements and technical workforce development will need to scale alongside the growing fleet.

Belfast occupies a strategic position within the programme as the exclusive global manufacturer of A220 wings. The site is recognised for pioneering Airbus’ patented Resin Transfer Infusion (RTI) manufacturing process, which enables the production of advanced composite wings that are approximately 10% lighter than conventional aluminium structures, improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

For the MRO sector, the continued expansion of Airbus’ composite manufacturing capabilities signals a longer-term shift toward specialised repair technologies and skills that will become increasingly important as next-generation composite aircraft enter service in larger numbers.
