AirAsia uses Aerowash System to target fuel savings through aircraft cleaning

AirAsia is using Aerowash’s AW3 aircraft washing system as part of efforts to improve aircraft cleanliness, reduce drag and support fuel-efficiency across its fleet.

According to Aerowash, AirAsia has estimated that deploying the system across its fleet could reduce fuel consumption by up to 1%, potentially saving around 22,000 tonnes of jet fuel annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 70,000 tonnes a year.

Aircraft surface contamination can increase aerodynamic drag, requiring additional engine thrust and potentially increasing fuel consumption. Regular aircraft washing can therefore form part of broader efforts to maintain aerodynamic efficiency during an aircraft’s operational life.

The Aerowash AW3 is designed to automate the aircraft washing process, enabling faster cleaning while reducing the need for personnel to work at height. The system also uses dry-washing technology, which can reduce water consumption compared with conventional aircraft cleaning methods.

For maintenance organisations and airlines, automated aircraft washing is increasingly being considered alongside other measures aimed at improving fleet efficiency, reducing ground-time requirements and supporting more sustainable maintenance operations.

AirAsia is the first airline in Southeast Asia to adopt the Aerowash system, according to the company. Its fleet-wide assessment highlights how an activity traditionally viewed as routine aircraft upkeep can also contribute to fuel-efficiency and emissions-reduction initiatives.
