AERO Vodochody has expanded its support for the Airbus A220 program with the latest composite repair qualifications and a higher-tier position in Airbus’ supplier network.
AERO has been involved in the A220 program since 2013, producing wing leading edges at its Vodochody facility. The company recently completed its 600th set of A220 leading edges, meaning components from AERO have been supplied for more than 600 aircraft.
In addition to manufacturing, AERO has contributed to the A220 program through Airbus’ Design-to-Build approach, supporting both production and design activities. The company has also reduced the standard production hours required for an A220 shipset through production process improvements and accumulated manufacturing experience.
AERO has also obtained new technical qualifications for repairing composite components used on the A220. The first group of specialists completed theoretical and practical training conducted by Airbus experts at the manufacturer’s facility in Belfast, followed by a final examination. A second group of technicians is scheduled to complete the training.
The new qualifications allow AERO to carry out selected repairs on damaged composite A220 components at its Vodochody facility. Previously, such components could require shipment to Airbus in Belfast for repair.
For operators and the A220 production programme, the capability can reduce repair turnaround times and associated logistics requirements while keeping more composite repair work within AERO’s facility.
“Composites require strict adherence to approved procedures and the ability to guarantee the outcome of a repair. The certification we’ve earned is therefore not only a practical benefit for production but also an important demonstration of Airbus’s confidence in the professional capabilities of our people,” said Matěj Zázvorka, manager of the composites department at AERO.
AERO has also moved to Tier I supplier status within the Airbus supply chain following Airbus’ acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems. The change makes AERO a direct supplier to Airbus and gives the company access to Airbus’ procurement system for materials and other production requirements.
The combination of A220 component manufacturing and in-house composite repair capability gives AERO a broader role in supporting the aircraft programme. Its new repair qualifications also add maintenance-related capability to its existing production activities.
Viktor Sotona, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors at AERO, said the company’s relationship with Airbus has developed from its initial A220 deliveries into a direct supplier partnership, with further projects and opportunities under discussion.

The Airbus A220 uses extensive composite structures, including in its wings, as part of its lightweight design. AERO’s involvement in the programme therefore covers both the manufacture of structural components and the repair of selected composite parts.
AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE develops, manufactures, maintains and modernizes civil and military aircraft and aircraft components. The company also supplies components to major commercial aircraft manufacturers and participates in risk-sharing programmes involving both component production and development.
