The modernization initiative will feature Curtiss-Wright’s ESCO SmartArrest system, an advanced computerized iteration of the ESCO BAK-12 energy absorber.

Curtiss-Wright Corporation has secured a $26 million multi-year contract from the Belgian Air Force to implement a comprehensive modernization program for its aircraft arresting systems. This contract encompasses the provision of advanced cable systems and turnkey services to three airbases, specifically designed to accommodate the forthcoming delivery of the F-35 aircraft to Belgium and ensure reliable emergency takeoff and landing operations.

Under this agreement, Curtiss-Wright will deliver and install new cable systems at Florennes, Kleine-Brogel, and Beauvechain Air Bases. The program aims to standardize arresting system configurations across these facilities, enhancing operational efficiency and safety. Additionally, the contract includes the supply of various services, spares, repair, and overhaul support to sustain the Belgian Air Force’s military flight operations.

The modernization initiative will feature Curtiss-Wright’s ESCO SmartArrest system, an advanced computerized iteration of the ESCO BAK-12 energy absorber, which is designed to ensure sequential arrestment of multiple fighter jet platforms automatically.

The project will be executed within Curtiss-Wright’s EMS division, part of the Naval & Power segment. Manufacturing of the energy absorbers and BAK-12 mobile systems (PortArrest) will occur at the Arresting Systems facility in Aston, Pennsylvania. The retractable hook cable systems will be produced at the Merpins, France facility. Furthermore, a 10-year maintenance contract covering services, spares, repair, and overhaul will be managed at the Merpins facility, which has a long history of supporting NATO European customers.
