HAL appoints Dr. D K Sunil as Chairman and Managing Director

D K Sunil’s tenure as CMD is pivotal as HAL embarks on significant projects, including the point production of F414 engines with GE Aerospace.

After 37 years of distinguished service in design, production, quality enhancement, and customer support at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Dr. D K Sunil has taken over the charge of Chairman and Managing Director (additional charge) of the company, effective September 1, 2024. This leadership transition marks a new chapter for HAL, as Dr. Sunil takes over from CB Ananthakrishnan.

Dr. Sunil, a driving force at HAL for over 37 years, assumes this crucial role with a track record of transformative contributions. His tenure has been defined by notable advancements such as the Radar Power Supply, Voice Activated Control System, and Combined Interrogator Transponder, which have significantly enhanced HAL’s technological capabilities and opened new avenues for growth.

His tenure as CMD comes at pivotal times as HAL embarks on significant projects, including the point production of F414 engines with GE Aerospace, and the recent Aravali engine production with SAFHAL. Dr. Sunil’s leadership is expected to drive innovation and strengthen India’s aerospace and defence capabilities. as CMD  Dr. Sunil will continue to lead engineering, research, and development at HAL.

Dr. Sunil’s ascent from Management Trainee in 1987 to Chairman and Managing Director, he has secured key projects during his tenure, including the Indigenous Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and Utility Helicopter Maritime (UHM), and achieving military certification for the HTT 40 aircraft program.

At the Mission Combat Systems R&D Centre in Bengaluru, Dr. Sunil led teams on groundbreaking projects including the Active ESA Radar, the Automatic Flight Control System for the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), and Mission Computers for both helicopter and fighter platforms. His leadership in these high-impact projects has significantly advanced HAL’s technological capabilities and defense offerings. As he takes on this new role, the industry watches with anticipation for the next phase of HAL’s growth under his dynamic leadership.
