KLM acquires first Airbus A321neo for fleet modernization
The first A321neo for KLM was handed over at Airbus’ Hamburg manufacturing site by Wouter van Wersch, Airbus Executive Vice President International, to Marjan Rintel, President & CEO KLM.

KLM will add three more A321neo aircraft to its fleet this year, continuing its tradition of naming each new aircraft uniquely.

Dutch national carrier KLM, a member of the Air France-KLM Group, has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321neo, marking a significant step in its fleet modernization strategy. This new addition integrates the latest generation of fuel-efficient technology and positions KLM among the leading operators of the A321neo.

KLM will be taking up three more new A321neo aircraft in its fleet this year. With this new aircraft series, the airline continues its tradition of giving aircraft unique names.

Marjan Rinte, CEO, KLMl, said, “This time, KLM employees were allowed to choose the theme. ‘Butterflies’ emerged as the winning theme, which ties in nicely with the transformation we’re embarking on with the new fleet.

KLM  Fleet renewal

KLM will invest €7 billion in its fleet renewal program over the coming years, focusing on several key updates. On European routes, it will replace Boeing 737s with Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft. KLM Cityhopper will introduce new E2 models alongside the Embraer 175 and 190. For intercontinental flights, KLM will add five Boeing 787-10s and replace older 777s and A330s with Airbus A350s. Additionally, KLM has ordered four A350Fs to replace its 747 freighters in the cargo division.

A321neo features

The A321neo features advanced noise reduction technology, minimizing decibels during take-off, approach, and landing, thereby contributing to a reduced noise footprint. Additionally, the aircraft’s enhanced fuel efficiency aligns with KLM’s environmental objectives.

The newly acquired A321neo, configured with a two-class layout, accommodates 227 passengers. It incorporates Airbus’ Airspace cabin design, including XL bins that offer 60% more luggage capacity, facilitating a smoother boarding process for both passengers and crew. Each seat is equipped with USB-C ports, and the latest lighting system is designed to elevate passenger comfort.

Marjan Rintel, President & CEO, KLM, said, “I’ve been looking forward to this with great anticipation. The arrival of the first A321neo marks the start of replacing our Boeing 737 fleet. The A321neo produces less noise and CO2 and therefore contributes significantly to a cleaner, quieter future. It also offers more comfort. I am looking forward to see how our passengers will experience the new aircraft.”

As the largest variant of Airbus’ A320neo Family, the A321neo delivers superior range and performance. It features sharklets and is powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, providing a 50% reduction in noise footprint and at least 20% improvements in fuel efficiency and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. The A321neo has seen over 6,400 units ordered by more than 90 global customers. The A321neo is capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus targeting a future capability of 100% SAF by 2030.
