KLM Airline unveils new RECARO R1 and R2 seating on A321neo
The A321neo features a hybrid layout with 36 R2 seats in Business Class and 191 R1 seats in Economy Class.

The KLM-customized R1 and R2 seats feature a debossed KLM logo, a BYOD holder, a USB-C port, and, in R1 seats.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has commenced the deployment of RECARO Aircraft Seating’s R1 and R2 seats on its newly acquired Airbus A321neo aircraft, following their selection in 2022. The initial seat deliveries began in 2023, culminating in the inaugural flight from Hamburg to Amsterdam where passengers experienced the advanced seating configuration.

This marks the continuation of a 25-year partnership between RECARO and KLM, dedicated to enhancing in-flight passenger comfort. The R1 and R2 seats, customized for KLM, are distinguished by the integration of a KLM-branded debossed logo and a bespoke backrest design. The backrest incorporates a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) holder and a USB-C power port, catering to modern passenger connectivity needs. The R1 seats, exclusive to the KLM Group fleet, feature an enlarged table in Economy Class to optimize passenger space and comfort.

Marjan Rintel, CEO, KLM, said, “We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with RECARO, a partner with whom we have shared a 25-year journey of enhancing passenger comfort, I have been looking forward to this moment and am very curious to see how our passengers will experience the new A321neo. The innovative R1 and R2 seats represent a significant step forward in providing a comfortable travel experience.”

In terms of sustainability, RECARO has employed one of the lightest synthetic leathers available for the seat dress covers. This material choice, coupled with the innovative redesign of the backrests—which replaces the traditional high literature pocket—contributes to overall weight reduction while enhancing passenger comfort.

Dr. Mark Hiller, CEO, RECARO Aircraft Seating and RECARO Holding, said, “Our collaboration with KLM to bring customized R1 and R2 seats to their passengers showcases the importance of developing seating that meets both customer needs and passengers’ comfort, I am confident that our seats will bring an enhanced level of comfort to passengers and sustainability to KLM for years to come. Congratulations on your inaugural flight.”
