Rolls-Royce and Yuchai to expand MTU engine production in China
This partnership aims to enhance product offerings, increase market share, and tap into new markets in the region, while also supporting further investment in research and development.

More variants of the MTU Series 2000 and 4000 from local production for China and the neighboring region are to come in the future.

Rolls-Royce is set to expand MTU engine production significantly in China through MTU Yuchai Power Joint Venture. Rolls-Royce and Chinese engine manufacturer Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co. Ltd (Yuchai Diesel) are broadening their collaboration with MTU Yuchai Power, their joint venture in Yulin, China. This expansion will see the production of Rolls-Royce’s mtu engines increase to manufacture mtu Series 4000 engines for both power generation and the oil and gas industry, mtu Series 2000 engines for power generation, and the Yuchai VC engine starting in the latter half of 2025.

This enhanced partnership aims to strengthen their product portfolio, boost market share, and explore new opportunities, particularly in the power generation sector—a key strategic area for Rolls-Royce Power Systems. To support these goals, Rolls-Royce and Yuchai will invest further in MTU Yuchai Power and ramp up their research and development efforts.

Li Hanyang, Chairman of Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd., emphasized the importance of China’s manufacturing sector development, noting that supportive policies from both the national and Guangxi governments have been instrumental. This collaboration between Rolls-Royce and Yuchai has achieved remarkable success in just a decade, establishing MTU Yuchai Power as a high-quality platform in the industry.

Dr Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said, I am delighted that we are deepening our successful and proven cooperation with Yuchai. Building on the solid foundation and experience of our joint venture, we will capitalise on the resulting opportunities and jointly tap into the enormous potential available to us in this region by combining the expertise of both partners. We can offer our existing customers an expanded product programme and convince new ones of our product range, which will bring them real added value.”

Established in 2014, the joint venture has already made significant strides since its inception. In April 2018, MTU Yuchai Power produced its first MTU Series 4000 engine, addressing a gap in China’s high-end high-speed diesel engine market for power segments exceeding 1400 kW. Since then, the joint venture has manufactured over 2,000 mtu engines.
