American Airlines appoints Howard Ungerleider to Board of Directors

Howard Ungerleider joins American Airlines board, bringing extensive experience from Dow Inc. and financial expertise.

American Airlines Group has announced the election of Howard Ungerleider, age 55, to its board of directors. He will serve on the board’s Audit Committee and Compensation Committee. Ungerleider is currently serving as an operating advisor to Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. Previously, he was president and CFO of Dow Inc. At Dow, he was a member of the senior executive committee, which set strategic direction and corporate policy. He retired from Dow in January 2024 after over 30 years with the company.

American Airlines’s Chairman Greg Smith, said, “We are very pleased to welcome Howard to American’s board of directors. Howard is an accomplished executive who has held key commercial, financial and operational roles over three decades at Dow. His financial expertise and global business and leadership experience will make him a valuable member of our board.”

Ungerleider joined Dow Chemical Company in 1990. Throughout his career, he held various senior leadership roles across multiple divisions and regions. These roles included executive vice president of Dow’s Advanced Materials Division and president of its Performance Plastics Division. Additionally, he served as vice president of Investor Relations and North American commercial vice president for Basic Plastics. He was named CFO in 2014 and vice chairman in 2015. Subsequently, he became president in 2018. Furthermore, from 2017 to 2019, he served as CFO of DowDuPont, an $86 billion holding company formed from Dow and DuPont.

American’s CEO Robert Isom, said, “Howard is a fantastic addition to the American Airlines board. His business acumen and extensive experience leading a complex, multinational organization will be important assets to American and our board.”
