Emirates has announced the refurbishing program for 43 Airbus A380s and 28 Boeing 777s, bringing the total to 191 jets including a new Business Class seat configuration in a 1-2-1 layout, and the introduction of 24 Premium Economy seats.

Emirates has announced a major ramp-up in its aircraft refurbishment program, committed to fully refurbishing 43 Airbus A380s and 28 Boeing 777s, bringing the total to 191 aircraft. The initial program targeted 120 aircraft for full refurbishment, including 67 A380s and 53 777s. This ramping up reflects Emirates’ commitment to enhancing the travel experience for its customers by introducing cutting-edge cabin products across its fleet.

The retrofit program has already seen 22 A380s refurbished, and in July 2024, the first Boeing 777 will go in for an interior refresh. Each Boeing 777 refurbishment will take approximately two weeks before re-deployment. Among the enhancements include a new Business Class seat configuration in a 1-2-1 layout, and the introduction of 24 Premium Economy seats, giving customers more premium options.

Sir Tim Clark, President, Emirates Airline said, “We’re topping up our multi-billion dollar investment in the retrofit programme to introduce cutting-edge cabin products on more of our A380s and Boeing 777s, demonstrating a clear commitment to elevating the customer experience with a best-in-class suite of products across every cabin. The addition of more aircraft  fitted with our newest generation seats, updated cabin finishings and a contemporary colour palette also marks a significant step in ensuring more customers can consistently experience our premium products across both aircraft types.”

With the addition of the Premium Economy cabin, the Emirates Boeing 777 will offer 332 seats across four classes: eight First Class suites, 40 Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 260 Economy Class seats. Retrofitting means 50 Economy seats had to be removed to accommodate the new Premium Economy section.

The work on refurbishment is being handled in-house at its Engineering Centre with over 250 project personnel working round the clock, supported by 31 major partners and suppliers. The aim is to return refreshed cabins that meet the airline’s lofty standards of quality and comfort.

At the end of the retrofit program, Emirates would have installed a total of 8,104 next-generation Premium Economy seats, 1,894 refreshed First Class suites, 11,182 upgraded Business Class seats, and 21,814 Economy Class seats across its fleet.

A380s with Premium Economy are currently operating on select routes, including cities across North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America. Emirates plans to roll out more Premium Economy services to more cities as it takes more A350s into its fleet later this year. The newly refurbished Boeing 777s also start serving more routes with the highly in-demand Premium Economy.
