Muirhead has introduced a concept for aircraft seat covers to cater to neurodivergent passengers with the ‘Sensation’ collection designed for an inclusive and comfortable experience collaborating with Scottish disability consultancy VIA.
Muirhead, a supplier of high-quality leather to airlines and seat manufacturers, has introduced an innovative concept for aircraft seat covers aimed at catering to neurodivergent passengers. The company’s new ‘Sensation’ collection is designed to provide a more inclusive and comfortable onboard experience for individuals with neurological or developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, learning impairments, or ADHD. This initiative underscores Muirhead’s commitment to fostering an inclusive cabin environment for all travellers.
To ensure the effectiveness of the design, Muirhead collaborated closely with Scottish disability consultancy VIA, conducted thorough research, and engaged directly with neurodivergent individuals who shared their experiences and challenges while travelling.
Jamie O’Donnell, Designer, Muirhead said, “Air travel can be overwhelming for anyone, but especially for neurodivergent individuals who tend to have heightened sensitivities compared to neurotypical travellers. Seat covers play a vital role in providing them with comfort and a sense of security, enabling them to better regulate their emotions onboard.While the industry is making strides towards accessible and inclusive cabin design, many current approaches tend to be overly medicalised or infantilising towards adults with non-visible disabilities. The inclusive cabin of the future must balance functionality with aesthetic appeal. The new collection features a calming monochromatic color palette comprising greens, blues, and neutrals, carefully selected to create a soothing atmosphere. Muirhead’s expertise in precise color matching, executed by their in-house Colour Team, is highlighted in this collection.
Utilizing advanced digital printing techniques, the ‘Sensation’ collection showcases how signage and patterns on leather seat covers can assist passengers in locating their seats and navigating their surroundings, particularly beneficial for neurodivergent travellers.
Among the notable features of Muirhead’s new collection are bespoke leather embosses, emphasizing the significance of textures in providing a multi-sensory experience tailored to neurodivergent passengers’ needs.
Furthermore, the project emphasizes the importance of material selection in creating inclusive seating arrangements. Neurodivergent individuals often prefer natural materials due to their less intrusive sensory experience compared to synthetic alternatives, underlining Muirhead’s thoughtful consideration in material choices for the ‘Sensation’ collection.
