DHL Express with GKN Aerospace in Malaysia will integrate SAF through the GoGreen Plus service in line with the commitment to the SBTi and the pursuit of Scope 3 reductions.

DHL Express has embarked on a collaboration with GKN Aerospace in Malaysia to integrate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through DHL’s GoGreen Plus service. This partnership aims to significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with international shipments by up to 30 percent for GKN Aerospace’s engine repair facility located in Johor. This announcement is in line with GKN Aerospace’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the pursuit of Scope 3 reductions.

DHL Express launched its GoGreen Plus initiative in 2023, which offers customers the opportunity to effectively offset the environmental impact of their supply chains through carbon insetting. The selected quantity of SAF is combined with traditional jet fuel at the point of air transport, effectively lowering the release of CO2e and other greenhouse gases. SAF is presently recognized as the most scalable solution, particularly for long-range flights.

“It is GKN Aerospace’s mission to be the most trusted and sustainable partner in the sky,” said Derrick Cullen, Chief Manufacturing Engineer, GKN Aerospace. “The adoption of SAF for our logistics needs in Malaysia represents a step in the right direction for sustainable aviation. Through DHL Express’s GoGreen Plus, we can demonstrate the viability of alternative fuel solutions and further encourage the market to scale,” he further added.

The Johor facility of GKN Aerospace plays a pivotal role in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft engine parts in the Asia Pacific region. This region is anticipated to experience the highest demand globally, with a projected 33 percent growth, as reported by Aviation Week’s 2023 Commercial Fleet and MRO Forecast. Consequently, SAF becomes a crucial element in mitigating the environmental impact of this robust sector growth.

The implementation of GoGreen Plus was made possible through substantial SAF agreements with bp and Neste in 2022, enabling the supply of over 800 million liters to the DHL Express network. These strategic collaborations are expected to result in the reduction of approximately two million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the lifecycle of aviation fuel, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 400,000 passenger cars.

“We are delighted to collaborate with GKN Aerospace in Malaysia as we seek to decarbonize carbonintensive sectors like aviation,” said Julian Neo, Managing Director, DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei. “SAF aptly addresses this challenge and it produces climate benefits in the immediate near term. As the world’s leading logistics provider, we are working at pace to promote SAF accessibility and affordability to help our customers realize their net-zero ambitions,” he further added.

SAF is produced from sustainably sourced renewable waste and residue raw materials, offering a remarkable reduction in emissions, up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel. Third-party verification of these reductions is carried out by Société Générale de Surveillance, making them eligible for consideration under Scope 3 and Science Based Targets (SBTi).

GoGreen Plus is a significant component of DHL Group’s sustainability roadmap for 2030 and contributes to the interim target of having at least 30 percent of fuel requirements covered by sustainable fuels.
