The inaugural recipient of the trophy was Ms Poppy Khoza, Director of Civil Aviation at the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

The distinguished Flight Safety Foundation’s Gloria Heath Trophy award recognizes women who have made notable achievements in the field of civil aviation.

Ms Tan Siew Huay, Director (Legal) at the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), has been selected to receive the prestigious Flight Safety Foundation’s Gloria Heath Trophy. This distinguished award recognizes women who have made notable achievements in the field of civil aviation. Ms Tan, a leader in international aviation law and the first woman to chair the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Legal Committee, will be honored for her exceptional leadership on the global stage and her contributions to advancing aviation law and the industry.

The Gloria Heath Trophy will be presented to Ms Tan during the Flight Safety Foundation’s annual Networking and Awards Dinner on July 11, 2023, at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. This recognition marks a significant milestone for Ms Tan as she becomes the second recipient and the first woman from Asia to receive this esteemed award. The inaugural recipient of the trophy was Ms Poppy Khoza, Director of Civil Aviation at the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Dr Hassan Shahidi, President and CEO, Flight Safety Foundation said, “International aviation is underpinned by a complex web of laws, treaties and regulations. Siew Huay has been a driving force behind many of the advances in international air law that the industry has seen over the past two decades.”

Out of the 11 nominees considered for the trophy, Ms Tan was chosen by an international panel consisting of members from the Flight Safety Foundation Board of Governors and advisory committees. The nominations represented various sectors of the aviation industry, including airlines, business aviation, equipment suppliers, regulators, research, academia, flight training and testing, and general aviation across North America, Africa, and Asia Pacific.

We encourage more to join Singapore aviation to take it to greater heights and to contribute to international aviation,” said Mr Han Kok Juan, Director-General, CAAS.

The Gloria Heath Trophy is named after Gloria Heath, one of the Foundation’s founders and an influential figure in aviation. Serving as a leader in the U.S. Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II, Heath played a critical role in the early days of the Flight Safety Foundation. She received numerous accolades for her contributions, including the Amelia Earhart Award and the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award. Women in Aviation International recognized her as one of the 100 most influential women in aviation.
